How can i Import a Vehicle by Land

You may need to import a car by land to Spain whether you are a company or an individual because you have bought it in another nation or because your home or place of work has moved.  Importing a vehicle from the USA, Japan, or many other countries around the world is not a very difficult process, but you do have to consider the legal requirements with customs and the administration.

An individual or a company specialized in the transport of vehicles can move a vehicle by land by truck or by rail. In all cases, it is essential to have the essential documentation.

Although a private individual can import a car by land, for safety and convenience it is advisable that a company specialized in transporting vehicles by truck or train does it.

It is essential to have all the original documentation of the vehicle inside the vehicle in case of a traffic control on the routes it travels.

If the vehicle is transported by a specialized company, it is responsible for loading and securing the vehicle in the truck, vehicle carrier or train car.

The carrier must be in possession of a transport document authorizing him to carry out the operation.

In addition, the imported vehicle may be transported in a container or on a truck. In this case, the car must be transported with the battery disconnected with less than 30% gasoline in the tank.

What documents are required?

Importing a vehicle by land is possible in two ways: with or without duty exemption, in which case a duty of 10% and a VAT of 21% will be imposed.

To import a car by land, the following documentation is required:

  • With tax Exemption
  • Contract of sale
  • Photocopy of ID card/Passport of the owner
  • Transport document
  • Declaration of value
  • Authorization of dispatch (we provide you with a model)
  • Traffic de-registration in the country of origin
  • Technical data sheet of the vehicle
  • Registration of the importer’s employer
  • Affidavit that you are not going to sell the car and that you have owned it for more than 12 months.

Excluding excise tax: 10% tax and 21% VAT:

  • Contract of sale
  • Photocopy of ID card/Passport of the owner
  • Transport document
  • Commercial bill of sale or sales contract accompanied by proof of payment.
  • Authorization of dispatch (we will provide you with a model)
  • Technical data sheet of the vehicle

Customs-Related formalities

For a car imported by land to enter Spain, it must first go through the Import Clearance. This process is carried out by the Customs and Special Taxes Department of the Tax Agency.

In addition, you must be in possession of the Single Administrative Document (DUA), which allows you to make the import declaration required by the Customs Code of the Union (CAU).

To import a car by land, the vehicle must be cleared through customs and all applicable taxes must be paid.

It is recommended that the vehicle arrive thoroughly cleaned, both inside and out, so that the necessary customs inspections can be performed and any damage that may have occurred during transit can be identified.

If the vehicle was purchased in another country, it is recommended that a document be completed with the seller describing the condition of the vehicle prior to departure (dents or scratches, spare wheel, electronic equipment such as navigation or audio-visual).

Having this document will allow you to file a subsequent liability claim in case of an incident during the trip.

Additional Steps to be taken

If the vehicle was purchased in a third country (which is not a member of the European Union), it must be approved for use in Europe and have the manufacturer’s European Certificate of Conformity.

In addition, the following taxes must be paid to the administration:

  • Road tax to the town hall
  • Registration tax to the Tax Agency (Form 576, Special Tax on Certain Means of Transport)
  • Value Added Tax (VAT) if it is a new car.
  • Transfer Tax (ITP), if it is the import of a used vehicle.

Once all the customs formalities have been completed, you must go to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) to register and register the vehicle (obtain the definitive registration). At the DGT, you must present the proof of purchase of the vehicle and the payment of the tax.

In addition, the vehicle must pass the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) and take out the vehicle insurance, which is mandatory for driving in Spanish territory.
